Although not a historical variant of Stone, the Old English element stān, meaning “stone,” appeared in several Anglo-Saxon personal names, most notably Æthelstan, composed of æþele, “noble,” and stān, “stone.” The Scandinavian masculine name Sten is also etymologically related to Stone. It derives from the Old Norse personal name Steinn, meaning “stone,” which was already in use during the Viking Age and its use continues in modern Iceland.
