Brittany is one of those names that feels distinctly modern, owing to its enormous popularity during the 1980s and 1990s, but isolated examples of its use may be considerably older.

The name comes from the English name of Brittany, the historic region of northwestern France, known in French as Bretagne and in Breton as Breizh. The region was named for the Britons who migrated there from Britain during the early Middle Ages. The English geographical term Brittany itself is documented from at least the early 17th century.

As a given-name in England, Brittany was sometimes used as an offshoot of Brittania, a patriotic name that came into occasional use on females in the 18th-century. Brittania was the female personification of Britain. The two names are also etymologically related: the French region of Brittany was named for the Britons who settled there during the early Middle Ages.

Brittany appears more frequently in American records beginning in the 18th century. Some early American bearers belonged to families of French Huguenot descent, suggesting that the name was occasionally bestowed in remembrance of Brittany, France, or of the family’s French heritage. Its use may be compared with other French geographical names found among Huguenot-descended families in the American South, such as Orleanna and Rochelle. Tany appears as a diminutive in some of these early records.

Despite this long history of sporadic use, Brittany remained extremely rare until the latter half of the 20th century.

Brittany first entered the U.S. Top 1000 Female Names in 1971 and rose rapidly during the following two decades. It entered the Top 10 in 1986 and peaked at #3 from 1989 through 1991.

There is no clear consensus regarding what triggered its extraordinary rise. Brittany Miller, the leader of the Chipettes on the animated television series Alvin and the Chipmunks, may have contributed to its popularity following her introduction in 1983. However, Brittany had already been ascending the charts before the character’s debut. The name also suited contemporary fashions for geographical names and feminine three-syllable names ending in an “ee” sound, such as Kimberly, Stephanie and Tiffany.

It peaked at #8 in Canada in 1990, #101 in England and Wales in 1999, and #14 in New Zealand in 1997. The name also made a single appearance in the French rankings in 1994, when it placed at #459.
