Most commonly, it is a patronymic derived from Michel, the Middle English, Older Scots, French, and Anglo-Norman form of Michael. The surname originally denoted the son or descendant of a man named Michel. Its spelling reflects the vernacular English and Scottish pronunciation of Michel, which developed into the modern pronunciation of Mitchell. Michael ultimately derives from the Hebrew Mikha’el, meaning “who is like God?”

Alternatively, Mitchell may derive from the Middle English forms michel, mechel, and muchel, meaning “large” or “big.” These descend from Old English micel, which was pronounced somewhat like the first part of Mitchell.
