Sky, Skye

- Origin: English
- Gender: Sky is unisex; Skye is strictly feminine
- First Est. 1850s
Sky comes directly from the English vocabulary word sky. The word ultimately derives from Old Norse ský, meaning “cloud.” In modern Danish, sky continues to mean “cloud.”
Spelled Skye, it may represent an elaborated spelling of Sky when used as a modern given name. However, it may also derive independently from the Isle of Skye in Scotland. The island-name has a disputed etymology and should not automatically be interpreted as “sky.” Proposed explanations include an early Celtic term meaning “winged,” possibly referring to the island’s radiating peninsulas, and Old Norse names interpreted as “cloud island” or “misty island.”
In Scotland, Skye is used overwhelmingly as a feminine name and is more likely used in reference to the island of the same name.
Both spellings are documented as given names by the middle of the 19th century. Sky experienced rare use for both sexes, while Skye was primarily used as a feminine name already in Scotland and in the Scottish diaspora by the mid to late 19th-century. However, neither spelling came into widespread use until the late 20th century.
Sky first entered the U.S. Top 1000 Female Names in 1999, by which time its use for girls had eclipsed its use for boys. It reached its highest rank of #710 in 2021 and currently ranks at #948 as of 2025. In England and Wales, Sky ranks at #922 as of 2025. U.S. statistics for Sky
