Axton

• Origin: English
• Meaning: “Acca’s town.”
• Gender: Male
• First Est. 19th-century.
• Variation: Acton
• Dim: Ax(e)
• (AKS-tun)

From the transferred use of the English place-name and surname, composed of the Anglo-saxon male personal name Acca and tūn, meaning “town,” “settlement” or “enclosure.”

Axton has been used as a masculine given name since at least the 19th century. Its modern popularity is also connected with the American fashion for surname names ending in -ton.

It first entered the U.S. Top 1000 Male Names in 2012, the same year that Borderlands 2 introduced Axton as one of its principal playable characters. The popularity of the game likely accelerated an existing rise in usage. The name received further publicity in 2017 when Mia Tyler named her son Axton Joseph. It peaked at #599 in 2021 and currently ranks as the 906th most popular male name in the United States (2025).
