Harlem

- Origin: Dutch/English
- Meaning: “home on a forested dune; home on a forested elevated place;” or “hazel farmstead.”
- Gender: Mostly male, occasionally used as a female name in recent years
- First Est. 19th-century
- Variations: Haarlem
From the transferred use of the place-name. Harlem is the name of an iconic neighborhood in New York City, named by its original Dutch settlers after the city of Haarlem in the Netherlands.
The etymology of Haarlem itself is traditionally traced to an earlier form, Haarloheim, composed of the Old Dutch elements haar (“sand dune; elevated place”), lo (“forest”) and heim (“home”).
Harlem also occurs as an English surname, particularly in northern England. In some cases, it has been suggested to represent a variant of the surname Haslam, a habitational name derived from places called Haslam (“hazel farmstead”) in Lancashire and Yorkshire. Therefore, some early examples of Harlem as a given name may have originated through the traditional practice of using a family surname as a personal name rather than directly from the New York place-name.
As a male given name, Harlem can be found sporadically in American records from the mid-19th century, but remained extremely rare and did not enter the U.S. top 1000 most popular male names until 2018.
Its modern usage is most likely associated with the New York neighborhood, which acquired particular cultural significance through the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s, a major flourishing of African-American literature, music, art and intellectual life. Its growing use in the early 21st century may also have been helped by American rapper The Game, who gave the name to his son, Harlem Caron Taylor (b. 2003), shortly before his rise to national fame. The name also follows the modern trend of using New York place-names such as Brooklyn and Bronx, while fitting stylistically alongside popular names such as Harley and Harlow.
Though more commonly used on males, Harlem has also experienced increasing usage as a female given name in recent years.
