Ashlyn, Ashlynn

- Origin: English
- Meaning: uncertain
- Gender: Female
- First Est. 1890s
The name is of uncertain origin and meaning. It has popularly been linked with the Irish Aisling, meaning “dream” or “vision,” but this is unlikely. Records of both males and females named Ashlyn can be found in the United States around the turn of the 20th century. Many of these early bearers appear in records as members of established Anglo-American Protestant families, making an Irish origin for these particular examples unlikely. Some early male bearers also appear to have received the name in reference to the English surname or place-name Ashland. Interestingly, even during this early period, Ashlyn appears to have been more common among females than males.
During the 1980s and 1990s, Ashlyn became substantially more widespread, likely aided by the enormous popularity of Ashley and the fashionable use of names ending in -lyn. Its modern usage may also have been reinforced by its resemblance to the Irish Aisling, among some families in the Irish diaspora.
Ashlyn first appeared in the U.S. Top 1000 female names in 1986 and rose rapidly thereafter, peaking at #127 in 2005. It never eclipsed its sister name Ashley in popularity. As of 2025, Ashlyn ranked #972 among female names in the United States. Its variant Ashlynn peaked at #245 in 2011 and currently ranks at #980 (2025).
Ashlyn has also experienced minor usage in England and Wales, appearing in the Top 1000 in 2000, 2003 and 2005, but never becoming widespread. In 2000, it ranked #969.
