Roselyn seems to have first occurred in the mid 1800s, it is possibly a modern evolution of Rosalind or Rosaline or an elaborated form of Rose.

Roselyn first appeared in the U.S. Top 1,000 female names in 1913 and remained there until 1953. During its first period of popularity, it reached a high point in 1931, coming in at #591, After several decades outside the rankings, Roselyn reentered the Top 1,000 in 2003 and rose sharply to #612 in 2004. The name experienced another modest revival during the 2010s before dropping out of the Top 1,000 in 2024; it returned in 2025 at #979.

Several alternative spellings have developed alongside Roselyn, including Rosalyn, Roslyn, Rosalynn, Roselynn and the rarer Rosalynne.

Roslyn has a particularly interesting history. In the United States, it was most fashionable during the first half of the 20th century, reaching its highest rank around the late 1920s before gradually declining. The spelling was considerably more successful in Australia, particularly during the mid-20th century. In New South Wales, Roslyn ranked #44 in 1952, #43 in 1953, #47 in 1954 and #51 in 1956, and it remained within the Top 100 as late as 1967.

Rosalyn has also enjoyed a long history of use in the United States and was particularly fashionable around the middle of the 20th century. It later declined but experienced a small revival during the 2010s and early 2020s. It ranked #888 in 2024 before falling outside the U.S. Top 1,000 in 2025. Interestingly, “Rosalyn,” the debut single of the British band The Pretty Things, was released in 1964 and reached #41 on the UK Singles Chart. Despite this exposure, Rosalyn never entered the England & Wales Top 1,000 female names. The spelling later received further exposure through Rosalyn, Calvin’s formidable teenage babysitter and a recurring character in Bill Watterson’s comic strip Calvin and Hobbes. She first appeared in 1986 and continued to appear periodically until 1995.

Rosalynn, with its double n, is a less common elaboration. The spelling is especially associated with former First Lady Eleanor “Rosalynn” Carter and has never achieved the same level of popularity as Rosalyn. More recently, it reached approximately #1,301 in 2020, remaining outside the U.S. Top 1,000.

Roselynn is a still rarer modern spelling, likely influenced by the popularity of names and variants ending in -lynn. It reached approximately #1,188 in 2019, its highest recent U.S. ranking, and ranked #1,476 in 2025.
