From the transferred use of the surname Beck, which may have several origins. In northern England, it originated as a topographic name for someone who lived beside a stream, from northern Middle English bekke, “stream; brook,” ultimately derived from Old Norse bekkr. It may also be a Norman habitational surname from one of several French places containing bec, likewise meaning “stream” and deriving from the same Old Norse source.

Alternatively, Beck may derive from the Middle English personal name Becke, whose origin is uncertain, or from a nickname for someone with a prominent nose, from Middle English bek or bekke, “beak.” As a German and Ashkenazi Jewish surname, Beck is generally an occupational name meaning “baker,” related to Becker, from older South German beck or West Yiddish bek. In northern German, Dutch and Scandinavian contexts, however, the surname may again refer to someone who lived near a stream.

Beck appears as a masculine given name in English-language records by the 18th century. In these early instances, it was most likely bestowed in honour of a family surname.

Beck also appears occasionally as a female name in historical records, where it was probably a shortened form of Rebecca. Some recorded examples may represent informal abbreviations used by census takers, record keepers or monumental inscriptions rather than the bearer’s legal or baptismal name. Nevertheless, it is possible that Beck was also used as an everyday spoken form of Rebecca.

In recent years, Beck has been used independently and as a shortened form of contemporary surname names such as Becker, Beckett and Beckham.

American musician Beck Hansen (b. 1970 as Bek David Campbell), known mononymously as Beck, may have helped introduce the name to a mainstream audience following his rise to fame during the early 1990s. He later adopted his mother’s surname, Hansen, and reportedly added the c to Bek to clarify its pronunciation.

Beck entered the U.S. Top 1000 Male Names for the first time in 2025, ranking at #913. Its appearance may also reflect the recent popularity of related surname names such as Beckett, Beckham and Becker.

In England and Wales, Beck appeared among the Top 1000 Male Names considerably earlier, entering at its peak position of #716 in 1998. It subsequently appeared in the rankings in 1999 and for the final time in 2003.
