Many Spanish-language baby-name websites identify Itzayana as a Maya name meaning “gift from God.” However, no reliable Maya linguistic or historical source has been found to support either that translation or the name’s use among historical Maya communities. Itzayana is therefore better regarded as a modern Mexican name inspired by Maya languages and culture rather than as an ancient or traditional Maya personal name.

Interestingly, the exact form itzayana is attested in Nahuatl. Alonso de Molina’s 1571 dictionary records it in the reflexive expression nin itzayana, meaning “to open one’s eyes.” Although this establishes itzayana as a historical Nahuatl vocabulary word, it does not demonstrate that it was traditionally used as a given name. Nevertheless, it provides a plausible Indigenous Mexican source for the modern name and may be more significant than the commonly proposed Maya derivation.

The beginning of the name may have been influenced by the Maya root itz, a term associated with substances such as “sap, resin, dew,” and other bodily or natural secretions. The root also carried ritual and supernatural connotations connected with divination or sorcery. It appears in the name of the Maya creator deity Itzamná, although the deity’s name has itself been interpreted in several different ways.

An older interpretation translated Itzamná as “iguana house” or “lizard house,” from Yucatec Maya itzam, “iguana,” and naaj, “house.” This interpretation is no longer universally accepted. Other scholars have connected the name with itz and interpreted the otherwise uncertain form itzam as “sorcerer” or “asperser.” Itzamná was an important creator and celestial deity associated with rulership, writing, knowledge, medicine, and divination.

Itzayana may have been inspired by Itzamná or by other Maya-associated names beginning with Itz-, such as Itza and Itzel, but no direct derivation can be demonstrated. The name also resembles the Basque names Itzaina, meaning “herdsman,” and Itzal, meaning “shadow,” though this is most likely coincidental.

The most plausible explanation is that Itzayana is a modern Mexican formation combining a Maya-associated beginning with the fashionable feminine ending -ayana or –yana. In this respect, it reflects both the Indigenous and Spanish-speaking components of modern Mexican naming culture.

The name has become especially popular in Mexico, where it reflects the modern fashion for names inspired by the country’s Indigenous languages and cultural heritage. It ranked at #44 among names given to girls in Mexico in 2020. In 2021, it ranked at #67, when it was bestowed on 864 girls.

The name was already in measurable use in the United States by the early 1990s, principally within the Mexican-American community. It entered the U.S. Top 1,000 Female Names in 2016 at approximately #770 and subsequently moved in and out of the rankings. It ranked at #854 in 2022 but has since fallen outside the Top 1,000.
