Areli, Arely

- Origin: Latin-American Spanish
- Gender: Female
- First Est. 1980s
A relatively recent Hispanic coinage of uncertain origin. Many sources derive the name from the obscure Biblical Hebrew male name Areli (“lion of God; hero”). While the Biblical name may have influenced its formation, this etymology is uncertain, particularly since Areli/Arely itself is used exclusively as a feminine given name in the Spanish-speaking world, and appears to have arisen around the same period as similarly styled names such as Araceli, Karely, Marely and Yareli.
The name became particularly established in Mexico during the late 20th century and subsequently spread throughout Latin America and among Hispanic communities in the United States. Arely first entered the U.S. Top 1000 Most Popular Female Names in 2000 and, as of 2025, ranked #983.
Other recent offshoots include: Arelis, and Arelys.
