A recent Indian coinage, the name appears to have been popularized after Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor named her son Kiaan Raj Kapoor in 2010. At the time, Karisma’s sister, actress Kareena Kapoor, told the Times of India that Kiaan was an “American Hebrew” name meaning “grace of God.”

The origin of this explanation is unclear. Many online Indian baby-name websites now claim that Kiaan is Hindi or Sanskrit for “God’s grace,” but there doesn’t seem to be any linguistic basis for this meaning. If anything, the name resembles Sanskrit kiyān (कियान्), meaning “how much?” or “how great?” There is no evidence, however, that the Sanskrit word is actually the source of the modern name.

There are similar names from other cultures that may have influenced the name. There is the Persian Kian/Kiyan (کیان), associated with meanings such as “kings; realm” and ultimately with the legendary Kayanian dynasty, as well as the Irish Cian, commonly anglicized Kian, meaning “ancient; enduring.”

It is interesting to note that Kian has been fairly popular in the U.K. It is therefore possible that its use among the South Asian community in Britain influenced the creation or adoption of Kiaan, which was subsequently carried back to India and elsewhere in the South Asian diaspora. This is only a theory, however.

Kiaan also fits nicely with the current trend for male names ending in -aan in India and among the South Asian diaspora, alongside names such as Vihaan and Ivaan.

In England & Wales, Kiaan currently ranks as the 389th Most Popular Male Name, while in the United States, it is the 924th Most Popular Male Name (2025).
