The exact origin of Kamiyah is uncertain. The name appears to have developed within modern African-American naming traditions and belongs to a broader group of similarly constructed names that became increasingly prominent in African-American communities during the latter half of the 20th century. The earliest recorded U.S. usage in Social Security Administration data dates to 1994, when six girls were given the name.
One notable bearer is Kamiyah Mobley, who was abducted from a Jacksonville, Florida, hospital as a newborn in 1998 by a woman posing as a nurse. Although the case initially received national attention at the time of her disappearance, it returned to the headlines after Mobley was found alive in 2017, followed by extensive coverage of her kidnapper’s prosecution and sentencing in 2018. This renewed publicity may have contributed to greater awareness of the name. Rapper Kamaiyah, who rose to prominence in the mid-2010s, may also have increased familiarity with the similar-sounding name and spelling.
Kamiyah first entered the U.S. Top 1,000 names for girls in 2018, at #883, and continued to rise, reaching its highest point around 2020. By 2025, it had fallen back toward the bottom of the Top 1,000. Since 1996, the name has been given to at least 118 girls in England & Wales.
